High Intensity Interval Training: Use An Olympic Track Star Training Technique To Lose More Fat

DIANA PRICE   August 14, 2016  (http://www.inquisitr.com/)

If you’ve been trying to lose weight, you’ve likely been doing plenty of “cardio” or aerobic activity to burn calories and drop pounds. But did you know a popular training technique used by track stars utilizes “anaerobic” training that might be a far more effective way to burn fat? Instead of slow and steady, you engage in high intensity interval training (HIIT) by adding short bursts of intensive anaerobic activity throughout your workout as track stars do. This technique has already gained popularity outside of sprinters and long-distance runners, as many bodybuilders swear by HIIT to get rid of excess fat.

Anaerobic exercise simply means exercise that gets its energy and fuel “without oxygen,” as opposed to aerobic exercise that is at a slower pace and with oxygen. It’s sort of the difference between being a little out of breath during low intensity aerobic workouts, and huffing and puffing because you’re exercising so hard you can’t even talk. Muscle for Life offers a great tip for differentiating between aerobic and anaerobic to gauge if your intervals are intense enough, where your goal is to reach about 90 percent of your “Vmax.” Your Vmax is a fancy term that boils down to the maximum intensity zone you can push your body, so you want to push pretty close to the edge.

“Simply stated, you’ve reached a Vmax level of exertion when you feel you can’t bring in as much air as your body wants (if you can comfortably hold a conversation, you’re not there).”

So, just as all the experts say, you should be able to carry on a conversation when you’re doing aerobic exercise, but not be able to when you’ve gone anaerobic. The more time you spend in your anaerobic zone, the more effective HIIT will be for fitness and weight loss. (By the way, this is a good place to remind everyone that before engaging in this kind of intense exercise, or any kind, you should always consult your physician.)

So, how does it work? According to Body Building, the conventional wisdom of recommending slow and steady aerobic activity for extended periods of time meant trying to keep your heart rate in the zone of about 50-65 percent of your maximum capacity. After 20 minutes at this rate, you start to burn fat at a higher level than glycogen, your usual go-to body source of energy. But interval training alternates between this slow pace with low intensity and brief bursts of maximum effort, usually lasting 60-90 seconds.

Track athletes have long used the high intensity interval training principle as a training technique, doing interval sprints where they go into the anaerobic zone: an all-out sprint for 100 m, then walk for 100 m; then sprint for 200 m, and walk for 200 m, and so on. High intensity interval training has been proven to help them build speed and endurance regardless of whether they’re sprinters or long-distance runners. But more and more people who aren’t track stars are discovering this as an excellent way to burn more fat without losing lean muscle, and alternating anaerobic and aerobic training has become very popular with bodybuilders.

You can either engage in this training the way athletes do at the track, by alternating sprints and walking for increasing distances, or you can simply add short bursts of 60-90 seconds of all out activity periodically throughout your workouts.

Multiple studies have shown that the conventional wisdom that “low and slow” aerobic training burning more fat is simply not the case, including this study by Laval University. The study measured how the two forms of training impacted fat loss in young adults who either did 20 weeks of traditional aerobic endurance training (ET), or 15 weeks of HIIT. The results showed that despite a lower overall energy expenditure in the HIIT group, they had better results.

“Despite its lower energy cost, the HIIT program induced a more pronounced reduction in subcutaneous adiposity compared with the ET program. When corrected for the energy cost of training, the decrease in the sum of six subcutaneous skinfolds induced by the HIIT program was ninefold greater than by the ET program.”

In other words, the HIIT group worked smarter, not harder, and had nine times the fat loss and the best results. Is this sounding like something that might appeal to you for your everyday training? That doesn’t mean you train 10 minutes a week and get results, but Muscle for Life claims you can get great results with three 45-minute sessions weekly, as opposed to aerobic training 5-6 days a week for the same duration or longer. Some other benefits of HIIT, according to Muscle for Life, are as follows.
  • Increasing your metabolism for up to 24 hours after workouts
  • Appetite suppression
  • Higher levels of fat oxidation in your muscles

If you’ve been using traditional aerobics to lose weight and have reached a plateau, or just want to try an alternative training method, high intensity interval training might be the key to kickstarting your weight loss and fitness program. There are some exercise videos out there that incorporate high-intensity intervals already such as P90X, INSANITY, or TurboFire, and some of the videos by The Firm also incorporate interval training as well as many others. Or you can do it the old-fashioned way like Olympic athletes and hit the local track.

Davis County taking on diabetes prevention with new program

Starting Aug. 26, Davis County Health Department will offer a new year-long program for county residents at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
CLEARFIELD — The Davis County Health Department is tackling Type 2 diabetes with a new program.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “PreventT2” will pair at-risk county residents with a lifestyle coach to improve health. Those with prediabetes who don’t up their physical activity or lose weight can develop Type 2 diabetes in five years, according to health department information.
Because Type 2 diabetes can’t be reversed, health officials are using the PreventT2 program to help prevent the disease.
“It’s a great program that is helping participants find hope and build confidence in their abilities to actually make positive health changes — something many people don’t believe they can do anymore,” said Marcie Clark, a community health educator with Davis County Health Department, in a statement.

More than 29 million people have diabetes in the United States. Another 86 million have prediabetes, according to CDC information
“Unfortunately, 9 out of 10 people who have prediabetes do not know they have it,” said Kristen Brimley, the health departments’s PreventT2 coordinator, in a statement. “If you have prediabetes or are at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, join this PreventT2 lifestyle change program to help reduce that risk.”
The PreventT2 program starts Aug. 26 and lasts one year. Classes are held at 10 a.m. Fridays. Participants meet weekly for the first three months, biweekly for the following three months, then once a month for the last six months.
The tentative location for the program is Grant Christian Internal Medicine at 425 Medical Drive in Bountiful, although the location may change based on the number of participants.
The program costs $200, with $100 reimbursed upon completion. All costs are covered for those with Medicare or Medicaid. For more information on PreventT2, visit the Davis County Health Department website.  To register, call Brimley at 801-525-5077 or email kbrimley@co.davis.ut.us.

Change your brain to lose weight

                     Rosa Smith-Montanaro, Rochester1:53 p.m. EDT August 11, 2016

Your brain is an amazing computer that is guiding you…consciously and subconsciously. You don’t have to think about so many vital functions that keep you alive such as breathing. Autopilot is a good thing when it comes to running the body and all of it’s intraquate needs. Autopilot is an subconscious activity. The brain takes care of many things for us and we are not even aware of it. Habits are on autopilot as well. Some are healthy, like brushing your teeth and others not so much.
There is also a conscious mind that is paying attend and making decisions that are in our best interest. Or is it really what is best? I would suggest that it’s filtering based on how it has been programmed. The mind is in fact simply following a plan. This is based on our values, beliefs and expectations. What is interesting about this is that we rarely select our program. It is given to us via suggestions, comments, media, culture, family, friends, media, etc, etc, etc. Basically we don’t realize we have adapted a set of beliefs and values that we didn’t even agree too.

An example of this process is if you have a belief that people your age can’t lose weight. Your brain will filter evidence around you to support your truth. It wants to prove you right and please you. The subconscious mind doesn’t judge beliefs. If the best eating plan for your body showed up, you wouldn’t even notice it because your filter isn’t looking for it.
Here is the cool part: you get to change the program anytime you’d like. You first become aware of the filter that is determining what is going to become autopilot. This takes time and insight. In essence you will have to recreate a new empowering belief until it becomes natural to you.
Start to imagine the life you want. Ask yourself what has to be true for you to believe in order to make this your new belief. Step into this and let your mind play there, even if only for a few moments. It is a very powerful experience to have. Visualization, affirmations and hypnosis will allow you to move through the process faster. Create an image board with pictures and phrases that remind you of your goals.

'MOM' recognized for diabetes education

                 By: , Montgomery Advertiser6:21 p.m. CDT August 9, 2016
A Montgomery ministry that provides medical care to the under-served received certification for having a quality diabetes self-management education program.

Medical Outreach Ministries – which provides free quality healthcare to the uninsured and medically underserved in Autauga, Elmore and Montgomery counties – received the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for the education it provides.
The diabetes self-management education (DSME) program at MOM started in 2013. There, a person with diabetes can see the diabetes educator in one-on-one sessions every two to six months depending on the needs and desires of patient.
The MOM DSME program is the only ADA-recognized program in the country that is volunteer-staffed, and exists solely to serve low-income, uninsured individuals with diabetes, said Chris Anderson, diabetes self-management education program manager/educator at MOM.

“Sometimes I meet individuals who have had diabetes for 20 years or more and have never had anyone explain what diabetes is and how it effects their  body ... and more importantly, how they can manage diabetes to live healthily," she said. "This is very rewarding work to help folks find within themselves the power to impact their own health."
MOM is a faith-based nonprofit primary healthcare medical facility with about 70 volunteers that help operate the office, including 13 physicians, six registered pharmacists and two mental health counselors.
At MOM, a monthly DISH class (Diabetes Information Support and Help) is held at MOM, and is open to any patient and family and friends of the individual with diabetes.
The certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs, standards that were developed under the auspices of the National Diabetes Advisory Board in 1983 and were revised by the diabetes community in 1994, 2000, 2007 and 2012.
There are 29.1 million people – or 9.3 percent – of the population in the United States who have diabetes, according to the ADA. While an estimated 21 million have been diagnosed, 8.1 million people are not aware that they have the disease.

Each day, approximately 4,657 people are diagnosed with diabetes. Many will first learn that they have diabetes when they are treated for one of its life-threatening complications – heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and nerve disease and amputation. About 1.7 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people aged 20 years or older in 2012 in the US.
Diabetes contributed to 234,051 deaths in 2010, making it the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Overall, the risk for death among people with diabetes is about twice that of people of similar age but without diabetes.

Diet Doc Patients Shed 20 Pounds in the First Month Through Healthy Weight Loss

 SOURCE: Diet Doc Weight Loss
JACKSON, MS--(Marketwired - August 09, 2016) - More than 78 million Americans are obese, with many more overweight. Losing weight, however, is easier said than done and according to reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), encouraging Americans to lose weight (or even gain less weight) has been primarily ineffective. Most overweight individuals either entirely forego weight loss or adopt unhealthy weight loss practices like:
  • Skipping meals
  • Using over-the-counter "diet pills" that are not supported or supervised by a doctor
  • Not establishing a support system in place to maintain healthy lifestyle and diet plan

Simple Changes to Your Diet Can Help With Mental-Health Issues

When it comes to mental health, your diet plays a huge role.

The link between the immune system and the worsening of certain mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, has been shown, though not fully understood. The link between the mind, the gut and your immune system has been long established. This is due to the presence of serotonin—the chemical found in the brain, decreased levels of which can lead to depression—in the gut helping to move your digested food through the alimentary canal.
Although eating foods with fewer inflammatory properties, unlike those found in the standard American diet, may not cure mental disorders, eating a diet rich in lean meats, fish, and fruits and vegetables may be protective against the worsening of certain disorders. The Mediterranean diet—one full of beans, fish, poultry, olive oil and whole grains and low in fried foods, processed meats, sweets and saturated fats—may not only help stave off Alzheimer’s dementia but also may help toimprove your mood and help with depression.

If switching up your diet sounds like a task you’d rather not commit to right now, committing to a“Meatless Monday” once a week or adding a large salad to two meals daily can help keep your gut, immune system and mind happy. Another option that’s even more simple to incorporate is to add to your diet fermented foods, many of which you’re used to eating. Pickles, yogurt and sauerkraut are common in most of our diets, and more exotic options, such as kombucha, a fermented Chinese tea full of antioxidants and good gut bacteria, can be bought at most health-food stores; or you canbrew your own at home.
If you’re already well-versed in fermented foods, you’re probably aware of apple cider vinegar’s health benefits for your body and hair. Instead of purchasing it from your local store, making your own apple cider vinegar is really as simple as buying or making some organic, unpasteurized apple cider, placing this in a jar and swirling daily for one month or less until your vinegar is fully brewed.
If you’re ready to fully commit to changing your standard American diet for one that will do your mind and body good, be sure to check with your family physician, especially if you’re taking any prescribed medications. To be honest, incorporating more plant-based meals has been shown to substantially improve overall health and even reverse certain diseases that require medications to treat, such as adult-onset diabeteshypertension and high cholesterol.
Commit to expanding your palate by changing your diet and improving your gut’s health, and your mind will thank you in return.

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - She just graduated Francis Howell High School; now she's become an international phenomenon after a Facebook post about the stigma of diabetes touched hearts around the world.
Madeline Milzark was just excited to have 35 friends and relatives share her post. The next thing Milzark knew she was being interviewed by the BBC.
Hard to believe, but in 2016 the stigma about diabetes is flourishing, especially on social media.

Too good not to post" reads a tweet, picturing a woman floating on a stick of butter with the hashtag #diabeetus. There are posts of sugary coffees, candies, and stacks of pancakes all with the hashtag #diabeetus.
They're supposed to be funny, but Milzark isn't laughing. She's had it with the stigma.
After she nearly passed out in desperate of sugar a couple of weeks ago, she posted a rant on Facebook:
"Diabetes isn't your piece of cake, or that super sized McDonald's meal with extra fries, or anything you see coated with sugar.
